Finding A Homeowner's Insurance Agent When You're New To The City

by Martha Hall

When you're new to an area, it's fine to visit a coffee shop or dry cleaner simply because someone else said they were great. However, it's not okay to partner with a homeowner's insurance agent simply because of word of mouth. Recommendations from others are especially helpful when you're in a new city, but when it comes to protecting your home, you need confidence that the agent is the right match for you.

Independent vs. Company

If you're a first-time homeowner, decide whether you want to partner with an independent agent or an agent that works exclusively for one company. Independent agents have the flexibility to match their clients with a variety of different companies to secure the specific type of coverage they need.

Company agents can only connect you with policies offered by one insurance company. However, it's worth noting that some companies only release certain discount rates to company agents, so you might be able to get the same policy with a lower premium.

Community Connections

Look for an agent with existing connections in your area, such as your neighborhood or subdivision. An agent that is already working with other homeowners in the area is already privy to any special insurance considerations or risks that your home might present, such as being in an elevated flood zone.

This knowledge can help ensure you find a policy that is equipped to protect your home in the event of a problem. Don't be afraid to ask the agent if they work, or have worked, with any homeowners in your area to learn this information.

Office Convenience

Most of the routine things you need to do with your policy, such as updating a mailing address or paying your premium can be completed online. However, when it comes to claim handling, it's not always the case. While the agent's office doesn't necessarily have to be located around the corner, you should be able to get to the office conveniently.

In the event you need to file a claim, you might need to sign paperwork or possibly pick up a claim check. Being able to swing by on your lunch break or on your way home from work is especially helpful in this instance

When it comes to protecting your home, you want to be confident your insurance policy covers your needs. Taking the time to research local homeowner's insurance agents in your area is a great way to go about accomplishing this goal.
